materials for painting & drawing

I recommend bringing the following materials with you to the workshop. I have links to products at dickblick.com, which has a store in Salt Lake as well.

For Painting:

A portable easel of some kind and way to carry your painting materials. Also a palette of some kind to mix your paint on. This can be separate, but is helpful to fit into a painting box so you can use your paint for several days. I have a micro painting kit made from a cigar box that I take with me sometimes, but for this trip I will be taking a Guerrilla Painter box which can attach to a photo tripod. The Guerrilla Box includes a palette and means of carrying painting surfaces as well. The kit at Blick is actually less expensive than the box alone from their website and has everything you need except paint and mediums. It even claims to include a ‘secret painting tool’😂!

Paints: 37ml tubes of yellow ochre, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, sap green, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, and zinc white. You may choose variations on these colors or substitute cadmium red hue, eg. because it is much less expensive. I recommend using the pure colors, though, for much better results. I use Gamblin and Old Holland brands both.

Brushes: You don’t need many brushes. I almost always use one or two brushes during a landscape painting. My favorite is the Windsor Newton Galleria flat #12. These brushes are synthetic and claim to be made for acrylic but they clean up well and last very well. For variety I recommend a filbert tip and round brush as well. Also a small palette knife for mixing and painting.

For Drawing:

Sketchbook with heavy paper around 9”x12”. I recommend hardbound rather than wire because they don’t smudge as much when carried around.

If you have pencils or mediums you like please bring them. I will bring a variety of loose paper, pencils, charcoal and erasers as well.

Blick Art in Salt Lake City has all supplies needed. Don’t feel like you have to buy something fancy, but a good easel and setup will allow you some flexibility. I also have some materials I can lend if you would like. Please let me know.

I will supply solvents for cleaning brushes and medium (Liquin for quick drying paint) because they can’t go on the plane with you.
